AAbsorbent ground (Art) A chalk ground which absorbs oil and is used in oil painting to achieve a matt effect and to speed up drying. "The artist uses an absorbent ground on her canvas whenever she does an oil painting." (Steven Westphal) Acronym (Literature) - A word formed from the initial letters or groups of letters of words in a set phrase or series of words. “WAC is an acronym for Women’s Army Corps.” (Steven Westphal) AFK (Internet)- An acronym used in online chatting meaning "away from keyboard." "I have to help my dad with something so I'll be AFK for a while." (Daniel Southard) Afrobeat (Music) - A genre of music originally created in Nigeria which incorporates aspects of American funk and soul into African polyrhythmic music. "Fela Kuti's use of Afrobeat music to express his political opinions often got him in trouble with the hardline Nigerian government." (Mr. Mcallister) Anatomical Position (Athletic Training) - The erect position of the body with the face directed forward, the arms at the side, and the palms of the hands facing forward, used as a reference in describing the relation of body parts to one another. "When refering to the forearm being distal to the head the body is normally in an anatomical positon. This way there is no confusion of were the body parts are." (Dashanitta Mitchell) Anatomy (Science) - The science dealing with the structure of an animal or plant, or any of its tiny parts. "He studied the anatomical structure of the human being." (Alyssa Koenig) Anthropomorphism (Literature) - A literary device in which an animal or inanimate object is portrayed as a person. "Aesop's fables, with their talking ants and fiddle-playing grasshopppers, make great use of anthropomorphism." (Mr. Mcallister) Aperture (photography) - a hole that lets certain allows the passage of light onto film. “In Photography, the aperture value is known as an F-stop.” (Whitney Mormon) Arabesque (Ballet) - A ballet step in which the dancer stands on one leg with the other leg extended behind them at 90 degrees. "The ballerina held her arabesque for a very long time to show her beautiful leg extensions." (Amanda Smyth) Athletic (sport)- physically active and strong. " Most recruits like to recruit athletic people for the army." (Aaron Harris) Availability Heuristic (Psychology) - The tendency to estimate the likelihood of an event based on how easily instances of that event come to mind. “An example of an availability heuristic is when one assumes it is more dangerous to ride in an airplane than in a car because airplane crashes are more publicized.” (Evangline Arguelles) Average (Mathematics) - The number that can be regarded as typical of a group of numbers, calculated by adding together all of the numbers and then dividing by the total amount of numbers. “I work for an average of 20 hours per week” (Jacob Manning) Aversion Therapy (Psychological Therapies) - A behavioral therapy technique for classically conditioning people to react with aversion to alcohol and other harmful substances. “Alcoholics may partake in aversion therapy by taking a drug that causes nausea when combined alcohol.” (Evangeline Arguelles) AWOL (Military) – An acronym for absent without leave. “John Doe went awol upon hearing he was drafted.” (Steven Westphal) BBunt (Softball/ Baseball)-to bat gently so that the ball rolls into the infield close to home plate. "Sam was told to go up to bat and scacrifice a bunt so that his team could advance a base." (Shea Noland) Base (Cheerleading) A person placed at the bottom of a stunt to hold the flyer in the air. "Michelle accidentally kicked her base in the face after the basket toss." (Marilyn Bistline) Benign (Medicine) - Of no danger to health, especially relating to a tumorous growth; not malignant. "The middle age lady was overjoyed when she learned that the lump on her breast was a benign tumor and she was in no serious danger." (Dashanitta Mitchell) Biology (Science) - The science of life and of living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution. "She went to college to become a biology major." (Alyssa Koenig) Blast Beat (Music) - a drum beat consisting of rapid alternating or coinciding strokes on the snare and hi-hat or cymbal. "The drummer was exhausted after playing a blast beat throughout the majority of the song." (Thomas Coppola) Block (Sport) - A hinderance to an opponents action." The main objectuve of an offensive lineman is to block." (Aaron Harris) BRB (Internet) - An acronym used for online chatting meaning to 'be right back.' "When it was time to eat dinner I told my friend Ashley that I would BRB." (Jennifer Haselton) CCoccyx (Medical)- a small triangular bone forming the lower extremity of the spinal column in humans. "Ben fell and bruised his coccyx and had to sit on a pillow until it healed." (Shea Noland) Caliber (Military) - A measure of something’s diameter, usually ammunition (50 Caliber represents a round that is .5 inches in diameter). “A 50 caliber round with blow a hole through just about anything.” (Steven Westphal) Camera noise (film making) The sound of the camera running. Even supposedly quiet cameras will make some noise. "The camera man had to use a barney cover on his camera to reduce the camera noise when he was filming." (Nicole D'Autrechy) Canvas (Art) Closely woven cloth used as a support for paintings. "The artist would always take his canvas to the park so he could paint the beautiful landscape." (Nicole D'Autrechy) Center of Gravity (Mechanical Engineering) - Point of an object where equilibrium is establish and will not cause the object to fall over. “Lowering the center of gravity doesn’t let the robot fall over and damage itself.” (Mario Simoes) Chord (Music) – Formed by three or more notes held simultaneously on a musical instrument. "A "C" chord is constructed by the notes of C, E, and G." (Susan Jensen) Circadian Rhythm (Psychology) The cyclical variation of physiological and biochemical functioning, level of activity, and emotional state that one's body experiences every 24 hours. (Briggs Bruni) Collage (Art) – This visual art style is created by putting different forms of media together to display a new message. (Delbert Alvarado) Cosplay (Hobbies) - People make or buy costumes and dress like their favorite fictional characters. “Next year I’m going to cosplay as Sailor Moon.” (Whitney Mormon) Cookie (Film Making) A flat board, like a flag, but full of irregular holes used for creating a pattern of shadows when put in front of a light. "The set designer used a cookie to create the eerie shadows in the horror film." (Nicole D'Autrechy) Crepuscular (Tone Word) dim or dark; of or relating to twilight. "The evening has a crepuscular charm." (Briggs Bruni) Critique (Literature) - An article or essay, detailed evaluation, or review criticizing a literary or other work. "For English class, we will write a critique." (Alyssa Koenig) Cross-Over (Basketball) - A place at which or the means by which a crossing is made. "Allen Iverson is very famous for "breaking" opponents ankles as he crosses them over while going to the basket." (Dashanitta Mitchell) Cycle (Baseball) - To hit single, double, triple, and a homerun in a single game. "Derek Jeter failed to make a cycle because he did not hit a triple to complete a cycle." (Anthony Conolly) DDeep Funk (Music) - A genre of music from the early 1970s typically identified for its rarity and similarity to traditional Funk. "Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings tend to be inspired primarily by Deep Funk and musicians such as James Brown." (Mr. Mcallister) Degage (Ballet) - The shifting of weight from one foot to another. "The ballerina gracefully did a series of degages to carry her across the stage." (Amanda Smyth) Derivative (Mathematics) The limit approached in the ratio of a function to its variable, as the variable goes to infinity. “In Calculus 1 I learned of derivatives, which helps to find a line tangent to your function.” (Jacob Manning) Divine Intervention (Religion) - Where God comes down to earth to come in between things for a miracle to happen. "That bullet should have killed us. We should be dead right now. This seems to be some sort of miracle or divine intervention" (Mitch Creighton) Donut (Auto) - The controlled sliding of a vehicle in a complete circle. "He did a donut in the field the other day and tore up the grass." (Richard Mullen) Down Rigger (fishing) - an aparatus consiting of a cable with a wieght attached used to take baits to deeper depths while troling. The fish are biting down deep, we should use the down rigger. (billy moore) Dribble (sport) - to advance a ball by bouncing. " my coach asked me if I practiced my dribbling, because my skills improved." (Aaron Harris) Drift (Automotive) A controlled slide of a car in a turn that swings the back end of the car towards the front but keeps the car moving in the same direction without losing control. "My friends and i like to go drift out on abandoned roads at night every weekend." (Alex Schultz) Diminuendo - dim. - (Music Performance) - Music gradually softens in volume. “The flute player played softer as the conductor indicated the diminuendo in the piece.” (Lauren Connelly) EEpidermis (Anatomy) - outer, nonvascular, nonsensitive layer of the skin, that covers the true skin. "Jake had a cut on his epidermis that was two inches long." (Shea Noland) Equation (Mathematics) - A mathematical statement that sets two expressions equal, usually has some sort of variable. “I deal with higher level equations in my math class this semester.” (Jacob Manning) Euphemism (Literature) The substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression for one thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt. "With excuses like, 'Baby that was a long time ago,' but that's just a euphemism if you want the truth he was out of control." (Courtney Flack) Eighty Six (Restuarant) - A term that restaurants use meaning to throw out. "Peter told everyone to 86 lasagna for the night because there was no more meat sauce to make it." (Jennifer Haselton) Existentialism (Philosophy) - a philosophical movement that is generally considered a study that pursues meaning in existence and seeks value for the existing individual. "The topic of existentialism has been on the mind of anyone seeking the meaning of life." (Thomas Coppola) Extension (Cheerleading) A basic stunt which requires two bases to hold a flyer's feet at chest level while a spotter stands in the back. "The squad built extensions and used signs in order to arouse the crowd." (Briggs Bruni) FFemur (Anatomy)- The largest, longest and strongest bone in the bone. Known as the thighbone. "Jake broke his femur in the car accident last week." (Shea Noland) Field Goal (Football) - Is when a team gets stopped on third down and select to have their kicker attempt a kick from the spot of the ball which is worth three points."When the Bulls were stopped on third down they decided to let kicker Mike Benzer attempt a thirty yard feild goal in order for them to take the lead." (Delbert Alvarado) Fenestration (Architecture) The stylistic arrangement of windows in a building. "When the bank employees turned on the lights in the building, the exterior looked astonishing due to the architects unique fenestration." (Nicole D'Autrechy) Floater (Surfing) Riding on top of the barrel after catching a set. "Kelly Slater scored even more points after he finished his set with a floater." (Marilyn Bistline) Fluid Mechanics (Mechanical Engineering)The branch of mechanics that is concerned with the properties of gases and liquids. "Fluis mechanics is also associated with with cars, engines, and hydraulics."(Dr. Rodriguez, Luis) Folklore (Literature) - The traditional beliefs, myths, tales, and practices of a people, transmitted orally, and not written. "Paul Bunyan is an American folklore." (Alyssa Koenig) Friction (Mechanical Engineering)- A force from one object rubbing against another causing damage or injury to one object. "Wheels have to be constantly changed from the amount of friction the wheels have on the carpet." (Mario Simoes) Free Throw (Basketball) - A free, uncontested shot taken from fifteen feet in front of the basket after a player is fouled while shooting the ball, or when fouled while the players team is in the bonus. "Michael Jordan hit the game winning free throw with one second left on the clock." (Mike Szymanski) Freeze (Video Games/ Dance Dance Revolution)-When a person’s foot must remain on the arrow for an extended period of time, or longer than one step. “The song ‘Candy’ has many freeze arrows in the dance sequence.” (Whitney Mormon) Fugue State (Psychological Disorders) - A form of amnesia in which a person "forgets" his or her identity, wanders from home, and starts a new life. "Jim Carrey's character in The Majestic slipped into a fugue state and started a whole new life in a small town." (Evangeline Arguelles) Fumble (Football) - When an offensive player running with the ball has it knocked loose and it's on the ground. " The quarterback fumbled the ball after being sacked." (Nate Allen) GGrande Jete (Ballet) – A leap through the air in which one leg is straight in front of you and the other leg is straight behind you. “ It looked as if the dancer was leaping over a large stream when she did a Grand Jete.” (Amanda Smyth) G-Force (Mechanical Engineering)- Amount of force exerted on an object relative to gravity. "The amount of g-forces in that crashed caused the cars front end to fold up like an accordion." (Mario Simoes) Grind (Skateboarding) - skateboarding trick where the skater slides along an edge such as a curb, bench, railing. Etc. using the trucks instead of the wheels or deck. “There are many different types of grinds, all of which are performed while sliding on the trucks of your board.” (Lauren Connelly) Grindcore (Music) - A mixture of Death Metal, Punk, and Hardcore music, usually with no bassists and lots of drums. Vocals very High and Low, usually can't understand the lyrics. "Phobia is one of the most influential grindcore bands." (Mitch Creighton) Grom (Surfing) - A young surfer who is part of the next generation of male surfers. "Did you see all the little groms in at Tables today?" (Marilyn Bistline) HHeat Death (Physics) – In this theory of total entropy, all energy transfers in the universe will have stopped. There will be no more change in motion or temperature, anywhere. "Heat Death is just another theory of how the universe will end." (Susan Jensen) Heat Transfer (Mechanical Engineering) The movement of heat from one body to another (gas, liquid, solid, or combinations thereof) by means of radiation, convection, or conduction. "Heat transfering is more accessible to bee seen in a lab." (Dr. Rodriguez, Luis) Herkie (Cheerleading) A jump, named after Lawrence "Herkie" Herkimer, requiring one leg to be bent towards the ground while the other is out to the side in a toe touch position. "Jackie showed her spirit by throwing a herkie after her team intercepted the ball." (Briggs Bruni) Horsepower (Automotive) A unit of power in the U.S. Customary System, equal to 745.7 watts or 33,000 foot-pounds per minute. Or it is the amount of power a car has at high speeds that makes it pull harder. "A Dodge Viper has around 500 horsepower to the rear wheels." (Alex Schultz) Hue (Interior Design) - The name of a color such as red, yellow, or blue. "The hue of the living room is bright yellow." (Amanda Barnes) IIcing (Hockey) - Occurs when a player plays the puck across the red line and the opposing teams goal line with out it being touched or going in the other teams net. "The referee called icing because the lightning player hit the puck from one end of the rink to another." (Richard Mullen) Interception (Football) - A defensive player catches a pass from an opposing quarterback. " Deion Sanders caught an interception and returned for a touchdown." (Anthony Conolly) Instrument (Medicine)- a mechanical tool or implement, esp. one used for delicate or precision work: surgical instruments. "The doctor's assistant sterilized all of his instruments prior to him performing the surgery." (Dashanitta Mitchell) JJiging(fishing)- when you move your rod tip up and down or side to side in an effort to provide action to your bait. He jigged the worm to entice the fish to bite. (Billy Moore) Jabot (Interior Design) - Vertical fabric sections in a swag drapery treatment. "I added jabot to the valence so the window treatment would reach the floor in order to create a more dramatic effect." (Amanda Barnes) Jah (Religion/Rastafarian) - In Rastafarianism it means, God or Jehovah. "The band Bad Brains have many sounds expressing there religion towards Jah." (Mitch Creighton) KKatamari (Video Games/ Katamari) - A ball that is rolled around by the Prince or a cousin that objects stick to and are therefore collected. “My largest katamari was nearly 3,000 meters big and within it was the Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower, and other national monuments.” (Whitney Mormon) Kewpie (Cheerleading) A stunt where one base, with arm fully extended, holds both of the flyer's feet in one hand. "The crowd erupted as Mike and Jen stuck the kewpie that they had incorporated into the competition routine." (Briggs Bruni) LLand Nav (Military) - Land Navigation, a way of moving across a certain terrain with a compass and a map. "To get to a certain point on a map, Mark used his land navigation skills to get to that point." (Charles Johnson) Launch (racing) The beginning of a race where the driver increases his rpm's from a dead stop and lets the clutch out. "His launch was better than his so he ended up winning the race." (Richard Mullen) Line of Scrimmage (Football) - The yard line from which the offense must start their play. " The center was the first person to the line of scrimmage out of the huddle." (Nate Allen) Liner (Skimboarding) – or “Down the Line”, this is a move that results when a skimmer rides out to the wave in one direction and after turning off the wave continues in the same direction proceeding "down the line." “When first beginning to wave ride most skimmers typically start with learning how to do a liner.” (Chris Walksler) LOL (Internet) – An acronym used on the internet for Laughing Out Loud. “I LOL’ed when I heard that we canceled a raid to watch South Park.” (Steven Westphal) MMarquetry (Interior Design) - Inlaid decrative detail on furniture and other surfaces using wood, metal, or other materials. "The chair had a marquetry of a vine on it's arms and legs." (Amanda Barnes) Metal (Music)- A type of hard core rock music. "One of my favorite types of music is metal." (Daniel Southard) MRE (Military) - An acronym used in the military meaning Meal Ready-to-Eat. Self-contained meal in a package for soldiers to eat when they go to battle. " When my dad came back from Panama he brought back a ton of MRE for my brother and I to take to lunch." (Jennifer Haselton) NNocturnal Thunderstorm (Meteorology) Thunderstorms which develop after sunset and are often associated with the strengthening of the low level jet. "As I was falling asleep last night, I could hear the rain from the nocturnal thunderstorm." (Courtney Flack) Noob (Gaming) - Someone who is very new or is not very good at a certain game. "It was John's first time playing the game, so his friends called him a noob." (Charles Johnson) Nutmeg (Soccer) - When a player puts the soccer ball between the defensive player's legs. "Brian got nutmegged by Billy and everyoned laughed at him." (Jennifer Haselton) OObject Permanence (Development) - Developing at six to eight months, an awareness that objects continue to exist after they disappear from view. “The mother realized that the baby developed object permanence when he no longer seemed interested in the game ‘peek-a-boo’.” (Evangeline Arguelles) Offsides (Football) - A defensive player crosses the line of scrimmage before the offense snap the ball. "The quarterback tricked a defensive lineman by making a defensive lineman to cross the line of scrimmage and get penalized for offsides." (Anthony Conolly) Ollie (skateboarding) - A trick invented by Alan Ollie Gelfand where a skater jumps in the air with the board right under their feet. "He did a ollie over 5 stair yesterday." (Richard Mullen) Onomatopoeia (Literature) - The use of words that imitate the sound of what they are associated with. “Words such as buzz and murmur are examples of onomatopoeia.” (Steven Westphal) Orienteering (Military) - It is how one reads a map, to understand and know the concept of a map. "Before a land navigation course, one must know how to orient a map or they will get lost." (Charles Johnson) PPas de Deux (Ballet) – A dance for two (usually a man and a woman). “ There are many different Pas de Deux in the Nutcracker.” (Amanda Smyth) Pass (Sports)- When the quarterback throws the ball to a reciever. "The pass that he just threw was a bullet." (Daniel Southard) Patina (Interior Design) - The natural finish on a wood surface that results from age and polishing. "As I was cleaning out the attic, I found an old trunk and decided to clean and polish it to identify it's true patina." (Amanda Barnes) Penalty (Football) - A punishment against a team for illegal play. " When the defensive lineman lined up offsides, the referee gave his team a penalty." (Nate Allen) Penalty Kick (Soccer) - When a foul is made in the 12 yd box, a free kick is given to the person that was fouled. "The winning goal was made from a penalty kick that John was awarded because the opposing team fouled him in the 12 yd. box." (Jennifer Haselton) Physiology (Science) - The organic processes or functions in an organism or in any of its parts. "In school, she was studying the science of physiology." (Alyssa Koenig) Pinch Harmonic (Music) - a guitar technique in which the nail or thumb slightly catches the string after it is picked, creating a high pitched sound in any position. "The squeal of a pinch harmonic blasted out of the guitar amplifier." (Thomas Coppola) Pick (Musical Instruments) – A small, thin plastic or metal tool used to pluck or strum the strings of an instrument. "Tom used an orange pick to strum the chorus of the song on his guitar." (Susan Jensen) Pick (Basketball)- When a player stands in the way of an opponent player to allow his teammate to get by. "Shaq's pick allowed Kobe to get that awesome dunk." (Daniel Southard) Pirouette (Ballet) – A complete turn of the body that is executed on one leg. The other leg is drawn up to touch the supporting knee. “It takes many years to learn how to do multiple pirouettes in a row.” (Amanda Smyth) Pitch (Baseball)- When the ball is thrown to the batter. "A baseball game officially starts when the first pitch is thrown." (Daniel Southard) Plie (Ballet)- A movement in which the knees are bent while the back is held straight. "In ballet dancers must warm-up with plies to loosen up." (Dashanitta Mitchell) Pneumatics (Mechanical Engineering)- Mechanical parts that use air as its energy for motion. Some sources that are in this branch are actuators, air lines, and cylinders. "The pneumatics of the robot are specifically used to lift it to a new height." (Mario Simoes) Potemkin Village (Political) - any hollow or false construct, physical or figurative, meant to hide an undesirable or potentially damaging situation. "The government created a Potemkin village in hopes to prevent public knowledge of the true reason for the invasion." (Thomas Coppola) Psycho Billy (Music) - A type of music that is a blend of 1950's Rock and Punk. "My favorite Psycho Billy band is influenced by Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley." (Marilyn Bistline) Pump (Skimboarding) – or “pumping”, is the action someone performs to continue staying afloat or riding on a smaller wave. You perform this action by pushing your board into the wave with your legs which cause the rider to stop from sinking. “The waves are pushing so weak today the only way your going to ride one is if you pump once you catch it.” (Chris Walksler) Punt (Sports)- The act in football of kicking the ball to the other team to increase the distance from your endzone. "They were smart to punt there since it was fourth down and 20 yards from their endzone." (Daniel Southard) Power Loading (boating) - loading your boat back on the trailer by use of your motor and not pulling it up using man power. he drove the boat back up on the trailer even though the sign said no power loading. (Billy Moore) QQuantitative Precipitation Forecast (Meteorology) A forecast of rainfall, snowfall, or liquid equivalent of snowfall. "The meteorologist's quantitative precipitation forecast called for five inches of rain." (Courtney Flack) RRigging (fishing) - the act of puting the bait on a hook before fishing with it. he rigged up the ballyhoo before troling it behind the boat. (Billy Moore) Rococo (Interior Design) - A highly elaborate form of decoration in architecture dating from the earlier eighteenth century in France. "As I toured Europe, I noticed many of the buildings had rococo marquetry on the outside." (Amanda Barnes) Romanticism (Art) – Developed in Western Europe in the 18th century, this new style of self expression emerged from the Enlightenment period and the French Revolution. The composers and authors of art, music, and literature began to use stronger emotions more closely tied to nature. "Beethoven is an example of a Romantic composer because of how emotionally intense his music is." (Susan Jensen) RPG (Military) - Rocket Propelled Grenade, used to explode tanks, small buildings, and anything that can be blown up. "Hawkmid used his RPG to blow up his neighbor's shed." (Charles Johnson) Role-Playing Game (Video Games)- More commonly called an RPG for short, is a video game in which the person playing the game plays a character in a narrative type videogame. “Kingdom hearts was a very successful RPG.” (Whitney Mormon) SSack (football)- When a defensive player tackles the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage before he can pass the ball. " The linebacker sacked the quarterback on a blitz." (Nate Allen) Safety (football) - A defensive player sacked or tackled an opposing player in an opposing player's endzone. "Warren Sapp sacked Brett Favre in the end zone to record a safety." (Anthony Conolly) Skimboarding (sport of Skimboarding) - or skimming, is a sport which involves riding a board on wet sand, shallow water or the waves that break on the beach. “ The sport of skimboarding has become increasingly popular with the last decade.” (Chris Walksler) Skimmer (Skimboarding) – a person who actively and regularly participates in skimboarding. “Bill (Beaker) Bryan is said to be to overall best skimmer of all time.” (Chris Walksler) Skirt (fishing) - an object put over a bait fish to add a flash and color to it. the purple skirt really makes the bite happen today.
