Teaching Philosophy Ideas/Brainstorming

These are only rough ideas, but I hope to form them into a coherent piece by the end of the semester.

I want to emphasize the Horacian concept of poetry (writing) as both instructive and delightful. In the more recent past, literature has been divided into the "academic, instructive" category and the "delightful, popular" category. The two styles seem incompatible. However, it is my belief that literature should not be an "either/or" choice in respect to instruction and delightfulness. A truly great piece of writing should do both.

In my classroom, I implement pieces that are both instructive and delightful, rather than the more common route of implementing both instructuve and delightful pieces. I also encourage my students to produce the same. Assignments are not broken down into those traditional categories; one piece is not a "fun" piece while another is "academic."

I also need an anecdote to start it off with and some elaboration. Ideas????
