But, unlike the following quote i dont't believe it does much to prepare ourselves for entry into the government, business, industry, or the professions." "We attend a university to receive a general education, to study the liberal arts, and to prepare ourselves for entry into government, business, industry, or the professions." A general education program gives you enough preparation for you to go out and search for an average job that most likely would't pay much. The liberal arts courses do however provide a little knowledge and experience about any proffession a student may be interested in. However if a student, after taking these general education courses, was interested in some career in government, business, industry or professions he or she would have to do further studying and do at least a bachelors program since most careers now require a bachelors degree. I agree that a basic education is the least you need to maintain an organized society such as ours today. As our predecessor discovered, education is important for a government to exist, and for the population to be civil. "To govern ourselves we must understand ourselves and our world—and ourselves as part of the world. To survive in our environment and appreciate it, we learn from others who have lived before us, and from who share the world with us now." The uviversity environment itself, and just being in the presence and communicating with people of other races and cultures helps us gain uderstanding of each other. One of the biggest phenomenon happening in the world right now is globaliztion. It doesnt matter whether people are for or agaisnt it because it is inevitable. With all the technologies we have today globalization is happening faster and faster. This phenomenon is easily visible on university campuses in and out of the U.S. Everywhere you look there are people from other countries and cultures. To keep up with globalization we need to use resources in and out of the classroom. A general education course by itself is not enough to provide us with all the knowledge we need to know about the world. To keep up with the world we need to watch the news, we need to use the internet, and maybe even study abroad. The internet, which some classes are adopting as a main resource for research and other uses is a great way for student to learn about the world. I came from Brazil, i lived in Massachessets, i lived in South Florida and i have friends from many different parts of the world so i have an advantage over many people. But for those who dont have that advantage the experience provided in an unversity is very important to the broadening of their knowledge. Study abroad is a great way to learn about and understand other cultures. Because in the past nomads and hunters and gatherers began to settle and create communities the need for effective communication and organization arose. Today because of our huge population and its continuous growth we need to be aware of nature and the world around us. We need to know our place in the world and understand our duties to maintain it. In this fast paced world today it is hard to remember that we are a part of nature and without it we cant live. It is hard to remember our duties as humans to nature and to each other. General education courses such as science, health, anthropoly, history and more help us uderstand that. |
