The general education program at USF seems to have distinct objectives that are meant to help students along their path to a carreer. The myriad of topics that are presented in the field of liberal arts are quintessential elements that aid in the sculpting of one's academic persona. The purpose of gaining education is to better yourself as a citizen, to become more knowledgable of the world and not just your immediate surroundings, and to form educated opinions that can help in future decision making.

USF stresses that one must gain awareness and become inquisitive of current events in order to share one's growing mind and broaden one's horizons. An education at USF or any university is a key to opening the door of life, and the general education program hopes to provide an individual with the tools s/he will need to reach out in the world and discover how to contribute to our growing society in the most efficient way.

The five main objectives of this program are meant to bridge the gap between citizens with general knowledge of the past and present, and hope for the future.

A student will be expected to learn and understand symbloic, interpretive, and expressive communication through three basic systems: written, oral, and a miscellaneous creative activity. I believe that in order to achieve these goals, one must have an open mind and the ability to love texts and learning to begin with. In order for students to "confront with an inquiring mind" the natural sciences and technology, mathematics, history, the arts, and humanities, the student must be open and accepting. The university understands that each individual has her/his own opinions, but through this general education, USF hopes the student will gain a new outlook and respect for the curriculum as well as the fellow classmate. There are certain tools that are gained though a general education at the university level that many citizens lack and therefore are not as productive in society as they should be. "Governing ourselves also means we have to see ourselves as part of a global society," (Waugh), and general education helps open the door to the information necessary to fully understand these concepts. It is best to avoid this inherent ignorance by learning methodologies for producing knowledge and how to better interpret human diversity on the global scale.

Waugh states that "Studying at the university enlarges both our understanding and our curiosity about what existed before us, what exists in the present with us, and what will exist in the future". This is very true and must be stressed and passed on through generations in order to maintain an informed and proactive society. The general education program plans on helping the student excel in the field of inquisitive problem solving in order to prevent harmful and sometimes irate arguments in the future. We are all here to learn how to make life productive and joyful for one another, and I sense that USF is hinting in this article that an education is the backbone to a happy, cooperative society.

Basic mathematic skills are also necessary, as much as some of us may have dissagreed in algebra two if we never planned on being engineers! This is the point of general education programs at colleges, whether we like it or not. You must have a grasp on all aspects of the world around you in order to meaningfully contribute your skills and ideas. I see the genED program as a much shorter and slightly more advanced version of all four years of high school, honestly. I think it serves as a nice introduction to college and helps the student decide what profession will suit them best after college if they haven't decided already.

There is so much information we should, as productive members of society, voluntarily gain and so many classic writings and works that we should refer to in our daily interactions. "Changes that begin...often initiate changes in other areas as well" (Waugh). Education assures the student is knowledgable of what these changes might have been, and this helps when deciding the future of what certain changes might be. Sadly, this is harldy the case for most people unless they're a hermit, so this general education program is intended to help those who seek wisdom but aren't exaclty sure where to start.

Life is about sharing and understanding cultures, languages, signs, rituals, celebrations, music, arts, and personalities. The general education program tries to bring together formal learning and life at a point where we can share our ideas and gain useful feedback from other individuals from all walks of life in the academic setting.

If you ask me, this "general education" should be available (and mandatory!) for all citizens of the united states (and earth, for that matter), because ignorant assumptions seem to be more prevailent than sincere knowledgable decisions.
