A General Education is an education that encompasses anything from math to English, from science to music, it is an education encompasses a small amount of information for a large amount of subjects with the hope that the student will find a subject they like and pursue that as their major in college. It is designed by universities to help students deicde what they want to do with their lives, what major they want to choose, what career path to take. As stated in the article, a general education is needed to be able to govern oneself. It gives us information about the rest of the world and helps us make more educated decisions about our lives. A general education also helps in understanding other societies as well as respecting differences in language, and culture.

To the incoming freshman, coming straight from high school, a general education is just the thing they need to be able to figure out what it is they want to do. By taking introductory course in almost every subject the universities hope to help make it easier and less stressful on students to decide on a mojor more quickly. They are getting a glimpse of what they will be doing in almost every aspect of the university so when they choose what they want to do, they know what to expect.

Not only does it help to make better decisions about a career path, but it will also come in very helpful later on in life. By learning a something in every subject your are better capable of making better decisions in real life. For exampl, taking an introductory math class could help make it easier for a person to make financial decisions. English classes are obviously necessary in life. Without any knowledge of the English language it would be very difficult tomaintain or even get any kind of job. History and other Social Studies courses are needed to learn about your culture and other peoples culture. If someone is planning on going to a different country,having some knowledge of that country, such as language, culture, etc, would be a good idea. Without this people would not be able to respect differences in people from other countries different than their own.

A general education is something that universities require a student to have to better prepare them for the future as well as preparing them for making a decision on what major to choose from. It is a very helpful thing to have as it will help very much in almost any situation. A general education is something that should be enstated in every post-secondary schoolto help make college and life decision easier to make.
